Paxil Side Effects, Including Suicide, Prompt Lawyers To File Lawsuits

Paxil, generically known as paroxetine HCI, has been linked with suicide, suicidal ideation, violence and self mutilation in children and teenagers. Paxil has also been associated with terrible withdrawal symptoms. These side effects have prompted a number of lawsuits to be filed across the country. Introduced into the United States in 1992, Paxil was approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of depression, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, post traumatic stress disorder and social anxiety disorder. The drug only was approved for use in adults. However, it has frequently been prescribed to children and adolescents.

The FDA has issued a warning for Paxil, stating that the drug can induce suicide and violence in children and teenagers. This follows a report issued by Britain's Department of Health which said that evidence provided by the drug company, from nine studies based on more than 1,000 youngsters, shows there is an increase in the rate of self harm and potentially suicidal behavior in those under 18 taking Paxil.

The dangers with Paxil extend beyond the risk of suicide and suicidal thoughts. Many patients who have tried to reduce their dosage or stop using Paxil have reported that they experienced severe withdrawal symptoms, including electric "zaps," dizziness, light-headedness, vertigo and other medical problems.

The manufacturer of Paxil, GlaxoSmithKline, may have produced inaccurate warning labels on product containers and other promotional material regarding the dangerous and addictive qualities of Paxil. British authorities required GlaxoSmithKline to remove labels from their drug that claimed it was not addictive.

The serious withdrawal and addiction problems make it difficult for some patients to safely stop use of the drug. The FDA, while warning the medical community about the dangers of Paxil with children, noted that Paxil users should not suddenly stop taking the medication.
